Starting preschool is a big step for children and parents alike. These five tips from the Edistää team will help your child settle in happily and confidently.
1
Talk to your child
It is important to speak to your child every day about the new preschool he or she is about to join. Talk about the positive elements of the school – teachers, toys, new friends and more.
2
Encourage independent play
Allow your child to play independently so that he or she is used to playing without you. When children start preschool they may experience separation anxiety (fear of being without parents or close family); independent play helps them settle faster.
3
Keep a positive outlook
Stay positive and keep reminding yourself: “My child is happy to start school. He or she will enjoy each day at school.” From experience, children whose parents are not very positive take longer to settle.
4
Check physical readiness
Make sure your child can communicate basic needs (hunger, thirst and sleep) through words or gestures. Preschool teachers are trained to identify these needs, but a child feels more comfortable when they can communicate them personally.
5
Take a tour of the school
Showing your child the physical preschool space before he or she joins is a must.
